UON Women in Science Chair
UON is where Beryl Nashar became the first woman dean of science at an Australian university. Building on that proud heritage for a new generation, the UON Women in Science Chair will be at the forefront of positive change, and lead in research translation and world-class innovation. Through the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Pilot of Athena SWAN, the University is strengthening its commitment to helping women achieve the promise of their academic careers and are taking important steps to ensure the full participation of women by evaluating and addressing gender inequality. More about these initiatives is available here.
Joining a cohort of other academic leaders and a working group across the University, the Chair will take a leading role in building and promoting gender equity within STEMM, and supporting UON’s participation in the Athena SWAN initiative. The appointment will be important to cultural change and building future capability in the current generation of researchers, the upcoming generation and the one to follow.
The right person for this role brings a PhD relevant to STEMM, and a global academic profile with strong external grant funding and research, or innovation, outputs. Candidates for the Chair bring a record in building collaborations by engaging proactively with partners to develop new revenue streams or productive education partnerships. An interdisciplinary way of working will be key to this role’s fit at UON.
Professor – Biology
The discipline of biology has performed exceptionally well in the Australian Research Council’s ERA assessments, with several research themes scoring a 5 (well above world standard). Biochemistry and cell biology has been awarded a 5 at every evaluation.
The disciplines of environmental and life sciences at UON are distinctive for their focus on the application of science for impact. The ideal candidate would sustain continued excellence and be compatible with existing research groups including reproductive biology, plant biology and molecular microbiology. Excellent opportunities exist for internal collaboration with groups such as Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources and the Global Centre for Environmental Remediation. This appointment can join either the UON Priority Research Centre for Chemical Biology and Clinical Pharmacy or the UON Priority Research Centre for Reproductive Science. A leading biologist could generate work with other disciplines such as chemistry or biomedical sciences or lead new priority areas such as bioinformatics where developments are underway in big data and genetics. The discipline of biology teaches a large undergraduate biology major, and the Bachelor of Biotechnology, a hands-on program with substantial industry involvement.
The right candidate brings a significant and sustained record of high quality research productivity to build on UON’s reputation for world-class innovation in biology and maintain an established international profile in the field.
